1 Beginning

Your professor will give you the following instructions; read them and follow the indicated guidelines.

• Execute the corresponding Internet browser and load the following web-page:

• Chose the English version.
• Open the menu of ''Teaching'' placing the cursor on that word and select ''Tutorial''.
• Begin reading carefully the first sections:
  • Objectives (section 2)
  • Theoretical basis. Spectrum of a free electron (section 3)
  • Organic Radicals (section 4)
  These sections are complicated and dense, do not worry if in a first reading do not understand them completely. Take note of equations and/or of the aspects that you consider convenient.
• The next section, Spectra of radicals with only one hyperfine splitting (section 5), continues the brief theoretical introduction. At the end of this section some basic instructions that you should carry out in the simulation are presented.

  In the subsections:

  • Radicals that contain n equivalent nuclei with I = 1/2 (subsection 5.1)
  • Radicals that contain n equivalent nuclei with I = 1 (subsection 5.2)
  we begin to see and to analyse different spectra in increasing order of difficulty.
• Section 7 (Basic Rules for the interpretation of EPR spectra) gives some important instructions for the analysis of the spectra. This section is also accessible from the corresponding link of the EPR simulator.
• In section 8 you must:
  • Study the resolved spectra of the subsections 8.1.1 and 8.1.2 and load them in the EPR simulator.
  • Simulate the spectra of sections 8.1.3 to 8.1.11 indicated by the professor.
  • Study the resolved spectrum of the subsection 8.2.1 and load it in the simulator.
  • Carry out the spectra of the sections 8.2.2 to 8.2.11 indicated by the professor.
• Finally the professor will indicate you a number of spectra of the EPR simulator (series c001, c002, c003, $\ldots$) that you have to analyse.

In the laboratory notebook you should deliver:

• The exercises indicated with [Exercise].
• The spectra that you have analysed in the section 8 (excluding those already resolved 8.1.1, 8.1.2 and 8.2.1)
• The simulated spectra of the EPR simulator (series c001, c002, c003, $\ldots$) that the teacher assigned you.
• Indicate in a justified way the assignment of the hyperfine constant (which group of nuclei causes a determined hyperfine coupling) for all the spectra presented. If it is not possible that assignation you have to indicate the reason.
